Let the race begin!!!

I decided to take a leap of faith and step outside the box.  Way out of the box.  My friends and I stumbled on a 5K run geared toward women, it was affordable and sounded like fun.  The series was called “Run Like a Diva”.  Who doesnt want to be a diva for a day? Oh, did I mention it was in Temecula’s Wine Country and included a wine tasting at the end? Walking (not running) a 5K has always been something I’ve wanted to try.  My Husband, the fitness nut has run the LA Marathon, Spartan Run, and 3 Ragnar relay races, with ease, I may add.  So I could say he was my inspiration.

The race was scheduled for February.  Deb, Pam, and I signed up in October 2017 figuring we had PLENTY of time to train.  With the holidays looming, my prep time flashed before my eyes.  January came and I tried to play catch up.  All the while my nerves were fried because all I could think of was “Are there any hills?”  “Will I make it over the finish line?” “Will I try the Rose or Chardonnay?”.  When we arrived, we saw women of all ages, sizes, colors, and creeds.  In fact, they made an announcement that the oldest participant was a young 82 years old.  At that point, I knew I had to suck it up and get to walking.   If she could do it, there was no excuse for me!!

The Run Like a Diva race was an amazing experience.  They host Full and Half marathons coast to coast.  Each participant received a LED lighted tutu, commemorative wine class, drink tickets, pink feather boa’s, blinged crowns, track jackets, and an awesome finishing medal with a wine charm.  I’m not going to lie, we were more excited about the goodies than the actual race.

Once the race started, I put my headphones on and rocked out to Linkin Park.  That gave me the pep in my step that I needed.  Of course, Deb and Pam left me in the dust, but I kept going at my own pace and knew I was going to finish eventually.

As the finish line drew closer, my mojo went into overdrive.  I thought to myself “I did it!” It was smooth sailing from there.  My pace picked up and so did my belief in myself.   To my surprise, my Husband was at the finish line and yelling encouraging words to us to get us through those last few steps!

I caught up with my friends and we crossed that line TOGETHER!  The 3 midlife ladies finished their first race in under 1 hour.  We set that as a goal and we achieved it.  It was a great feeling!

Deb, Pam, and I at the finish line!

Achieving my goal with my friends made it even better.  These are the things that our Middle Years are all about.

I’m happy to say that I signed up for the 2019 race and will again represent on my Middle Years Journey.    Pam, Deb, and I said we are going to “jog” the next time..guess I better start training now!
